Elpidio Barzaga

Elpidio F. Barzaga, Jr. (born March 25, 1950 in Dasmariñas , Cavite ) is a Filipino politician of the Kabalikat ng Malayang Pilipino (Kampi), the Lakas Democratic Cong Kristiyano at Muslim (Lakas-Kampi), the Liberal Party (LP) and the National Unity Party (NUP), which was mayor of Dasmariñas between 1998 and 2007 and has been a member of the House of Representatives since 2007 .

Life

Lawyer, professor and mayor

After attending school, Barzaga completed a degree in accounting at San Beda College , from which he graduated in 1970 with a Bachelor of Science (BS Commerce Major in Accounting) "cum laude". A subsequent postgraduate studies of law at the Far Eastern University , he finished (FEU) in 1975 with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) "magna cum laude". After he was admitted to the bar (Philippine Bar) on March 31, 1976 , he took up a position as a lawyer and sworn auditor and worked as such until 1998. He also held a professorship at the Institute of Law at Far Eastern University between 1976 and 1992 .

In the meantime, Barzaga began his political career when he first served as acting mayor of Dasmariñas from 1986 to 1987. In 1998 he was again mayor of Dasmariñas and held this office until 2007. Since he had reached the maximum consecutive eligibility limit in 2007 after nine years in office, he could not run again for the office of mayor of Dasmariñas, and was therefore replaced by his wife Jennifer Austria Barzaga.

Member of the House of Representatives

In the elections of May 14, 2007 , Barzaga was elected for the first time as a member of the House of Representatives for the Lakas Democratic Cong Kristiyano at Muslim (Lakas-Kampi) and initially represented the constituency of Cavite 2nd District . In the elections of May 10, 2010 , he was re-elected in the newly designed and Dasmariñas comprehensive constituency Cavite 4th District-Lone District of Dasmariñas with 163,766 votes (91.68 percent) and was able to stand against the candidate of the Nacionalista Party (NP), Ramon Campos , enforce, which received 6,158 votes (3.45 percent). Second in this constituency was the non-party , Fernando Campos, who received 7,551 votes (4.23 percent).

Barzaga was re-elected in the elections of May 13, 2013 in the constituency of Cavite 4th District-Lone District of Dasmariñas , where he now ran for the National Unity Party (NUP). With 133,570 votes (80.86 percent) and a majority of 114,726 votes (69.45 percentage points), he again clearly prevailed against his challenger from the Lakas CMD, Miguel Ilano, with 18,844 votes (11.41 percent) ) were omitted. In the current 16th legislative period , which runs from 2013 to 2016  , he is chairman of the parliamentary committee on games and amusements . This is responsible for all matters that are directly and fundamentally concerned with all types and locations of gambling and entertainment.

Since Barzaga has reached the maximum consecutive eligibility of nine years, he will not be allowed to run again in the upcoming elections on May 9, 2016 , and will therefore be eliminated from the House of Representatives. Instead, he will apply again for the office of mayor of Dasmariñas, since his wife Jennifer A. Barzaga is no longer allowed to run for three consecutive terms.
