Els of Gemmingen
Els von Gemmingen (born June 29, 1466 ; † December 25, 1532 in Speyer ) was prioress of the Magdalenenkloster (the Dominican Sisters) in Speyer from 1504 .
Live and act
Els (Elisabeth) was one of the many children of Germersheim's Vogts von Gemmingen zu Michelfeld, called Keckhans (1431–1487) and his wife Brigitta von Neuenstein . The father intended all children except for his son Orendel (1464–1520) for spiritual careers. Her brother Uriel von Gemmingen (1468–1514) officiated from 1508 to 1514 as Elector and Archbishop of Mainz . Els entered the Magdalenenkloster in Speyer, where she and her brother Georg (1458–1511) donated a precious window in the church choir in 1498 . She was elected prioress of the monastery in 1504 and helped build the Catholic church in Walldorf in 1507 , from where the monastery drew its tithe .
Its ornate antiphonal has stood the test of time and was in a Swiss collection in 1929 before being offered on the art market again in 2012. The ornate liturgical book shows in a miniature on fol. 171 a representation of Elisabeth kneeling before Saint Catherine. She is marked by the coat of arms of the von Gemmingen family and a banner above her head and is dressed in a Dominican robe.
