The Eltonsee ( Russian Озеро Эльтон ) is an approximately 150 km² large and on average only 30 to 60 cm deep, drainless salt lake in the Volgograd Oblast in Russia . The lake lies 18 meters below sea level in the northern part of the Caspian Depression, right on the border with Kazakhstan , about 200 km east of Volgograd and the lower reaches of the Volga . It is fed by the Chara , Landug , Soljanka , Samaroda , Malaja Samaroda and Sorotschja Balka tributaries .

The lake is named after an English ship captain in Russian service, John Elton, who first mapped the water around 1730 . In 1765 the German natural scientist Johann Reinhold Forster and his son Georg Forster made it to Lake Elton. An inspection tour on behalf of Tsarina Catherine II took them to the Kalmyk steppe and to the recently founded settlements of the Volga Germans .

Salt was extracted from the lake from the time of Ivan the Terrible to the end of the 19th century. This was done under state control until 1865 and then very intensively under private direction until 1882. The Elton health resort has existed near the lake since 1910 and a sanatorium since 1945. The salt water from Elton is said to have beneficial effects on various diseases.

Since 2014, one of the toughest long-distance running competitions in Russia has taken place once a year in the steppe area around Lake Elton . The Elton Volgabus Ultra-Trail is run over three distances: the marathon is 42 km, the night race is 82 km and the ultimate run is 100 miles around the whole lake.
