em (trio)
[em] was a German piano trio that existed from 2002 to 2013. The jazz combo already caused a stir with their debut Call it [em] , released in January 2005. The trio consisted of the pianist Michael Wollny , the double bass player Eva Kruse and the drummer Eric Schaefer . The name of the group is made up of the initials of the first names Michael Wollnys and his fellow musicians Eva Kruse and Eric Schaefer. In addition, [em] is the phonetic spelling of the letter "M", which, tilted on its side, can be read as a "3" symbolizing the trio.
history
The trio was founded in 2002. Three years later, the debut, recorded in a Gothenburg studio, was released as the prelude to the Young German Jazz series by the German record label ACT . In the summer of the same year, the three musicians celebrated their debut in just one week at the JazzBaltica Festival in Salzau, Schleswig-Holstein, at the Canadian Festival International de Jazz de Montréal and at the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague, Netherlands. In the March 2008 issue of the Pianonews magazine , critic Tom Fuchs counted the trio among the "Shooting Stars of the young, up-and-coming generation of jazz in this country". In his review of the trio's first live album, Thorsten Hings wrote in the magazine Jazz Podium (October 2010):
“The qualities of this trio lie particularly in the ability to evoke images in the minds of the audience… Wollny, Kruse and Schaefer are a beneficial exception in the supreme discipline of jazz. No standard recitations exhaust the ear, but highly exciting original compositions create projection surfaces for the recipient's fantasies. "
Almost at the same time, Die Welt said that the trio was being admired far more than other German bands in the last 20 years. On the CD Wasted & Wanted , released in 2012 , the trio traded as Michael Wollny's [em] .
