Em Bebbi sy Jazz ( The Bebbi his jazz , Bebbi is the nickname for the people of Basel) is a one-day jazz festival that has been held in Basel every August since 1984 . With 50,000 to 70,000 visitors, it is one of the largest jazz events in Switzerland.

In 1984, 16 groups played at Em Bebbi sy Jazz at eight venues around the Hotel Basel. In the meantime, the event has grown to include more than 70 bands, which appear at around 30 venues from 6 p.m. for around seven hours. Most of the formations are from the region, which is a stronghold of jazz in Switzerland; but groups from other European countries and overseas are also represented. Different genres are represented: ragtime , dixie , bebop , blues , funk , latin , swing , a big band on the marketplace stage at the town hall, gospel choirs in the church, jazz rock and street bands in public squares and alleys and small groups in pubs and courtyards. The hustle and bustle takes place within an area of 600 by 250 meters, with the center on and around the Spalenberg, a core area of Grossbasler's old town . No entry is required for the entire event; it is financed by sponsors, patrons and contributions from the participating restaurants. The organization is still voluntary today. In 2013 Ernst Mutschler gave up the management of the festival.

The day after Em Bebbi sy Jazz , another, small jazz event has established itself, the benefit event Em Bebbi sy Burgergmaind, co-organized by the community , for the benefit of a social institution.
