Emanuel Pastreich (born October 16, 1964 in Nashville , Tennessee ) is director of the Asia Institute as well as director of the Earth Management Institute and Vice President of the private University of Brain Education in Seoul, Korea. From 2011 to 2016 he worked as a professor of East Asian literature at Kyung Hee University . He writes and researches East Asian literature as well as current politics, environment and technology.

Career

Pastreich attended Lowell High School in San Francisco , then from 1983 to 1987 Yale University , from which he graduated with a BA in Chinese. He then studied at the National Taiwan University and at the University of Tokyo , where he obtained a master's degree in comparative literature in 1991 . He wrote his master's thesis on Tanomura Chikuden in Japanese. The title was Edo kôki bunjin Tanomura Chikuden: Muyô no shiga (The Late Edo Literatus Tanomura Chikuden; The Uselessness of Painting and Poetry). In 1998 he graduated with a Ph.D. on East Asian Literature from Harvard University . As an Assistant Professor , he has taught at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign , George Washington University, and the Solbridge International School of Business . Since 2011 he has been a professor at the College of International Studies at Kyung-Hee University in South Korea .

Political work in public service

Pastreich worked from 2009 to 2012 as advisor to the governor of Chungnam Province on international relations , as well as for the Daedeok Innopolis Science College and as a committee member of the city of Daejeon in the areas of administration and foreign investments.

Pastreich is director of the Asian Institute, an NGO that sheds light on the intersections of international relations, environmental problems and technology in East Asia. From 2007 to 2008 he advised the Governor of Chungnam Province on international relations and foreign investments. Before that, from 2005 to 2007 he was director of the KORUS House, an NGO of International Relations at the Korean Embassy in Washington, DC and editor of Dynamic Korea , a magazine with a focus on Korean culture and society, the Korean Foreign Ministry issued . Pastreich's publications include books on East Asian literature such as The Novels of Park Jiwon : Translations of Overlooked Worlds , The Visible Vernacular: Vernacular Chinese and the Emergence of a Literary Discourse on Popular Narrative in Edo Japan , Life is a Matter of Direction, not Speed: A Robinson Crusoe in Korea , and Scholars of the World Speak out About Korea's Future, as well as a series of discussions with Francis Fukuyama , Larry Wilkerson and Noam Chomsky on current Korean issues.
