Embrun [ ˌɛmbɹən , French. ɑ̃bʁœ̃ ] is a city in eastern Ontario , Canada .

The place was named after the town of Embrun in the French Hautes-Alpes region. May 15, 2006 was Embrun's 150th anniversary. The city has a population of 6,380 (as of 2011).

history

The first settlers arrived in Embrun in 1845. The city was named after the French city of the same name . From 1870 onwards, agriculture developed in the settlement, as a result of which the population grew rapidly until the end of the 19th century .

In 1898 the New York – Ottawa railway line was built. The railway stopped in Embrun six times a day, which gave the city excellent connections to the two major cities . This boosted the economy and growth of Embrun until the railway line was shut down in February 1957. The closure of the railway line meant for Embrun, in connection with the general rural exodus that prevailed in the middle of the 20th century, a considerable reduction in the number of inhabitants.

The traffic connection between Embrun and Ottawa was not improved again until the late 1970s with the opening of Ontario Highway 417 . The drive to downtown Ottawa was now about thirty minutes, which is why many people working in Ottawa moved to Embrun. The city was then able to record a growing population again.

The population doubled between 1985 and 1995. As a result, a shopping mall was opened in Embrun and a commercial area developed . Between 2001 and 2006 the population grew at a rate of 26.6%, and between 2006 and 2001 it grew by 12.5%.

Economy and Infrastructure

Shopping mall in Embrun

Embrun has its own industrial park. However, the city is heavily dependent on Ottawa. Most of the employees in Embrun are commuters and travel to Ottawa on a daily basis.

traffic

There is a direct connection to Ottawa via the Ontario Highway 417, which is of great importance for the people of Embrun. The next ramp onto the highway is eight kilometers from Embrun.

The most important street within the city is Notre-Dame Street, which stretches across the city from west to east. The road is single lane in each direction, which is why it is often congested during rush hour. An examination of the city to widen the street to two lanes in each direction, however, showed that the necessary structural extensions would be too expensive.

education

There are three elementary schools and one secondary school in Embrun . Since in the Ontario educational system the pupils go to different types of school depending on language and religion, there is de facto no real freedom of choice for a large part of the pupils.

Population structure
