Emil Hartmann (shipowner)
Emil Hartmann (born January 18, 1927 in Groß-Umstadt ; † October 7, 2007 in Bremen ) was a German shipowner. He was the owner and founder of the shipping company German Tanker Shipping with one of the largest tanker fleets under the German flag.
biography
Hartmann was born one of five children into a working-class family. After the end of the war and release from captivity, he initially worked as a construction worker. From 1946 he made up his Abitur. He followed his brother Karl to Bremen and worked as a worker in the port. In 1947 he began an apprenticeship as a shipping clerk at the Carl Büttner shipping company; In 1971 he became a co-owner there.
In 1998 he founded the Bremen shipping company German Tanker Shipping with around 350 employees today. The shipping company has 13 state-of-the-art double-hull tankers for the transport of oil and products in European waters, in the Mediterranean and in the Gulf of Mexico, which were built by the Lindenau shipyard in Kiel-Friedrichsort. Its basic principle included ordering all newbuildings from German shipyards, operating the ships under the German flag and with German seafarers.
On September 20, 1994, he was honored with the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for his "worldwide commitment to German shipping and the nautical offspring" . In 2007 he received the Kiel Seal of Splendor .
He died in 2007 after a short and serious illness at the age of 80.
