Emil Herkenrath

Emil Herkenrath (born November 23, 1878 in Berlin ; † 1945 ) was a German classical philologist , Middle Latin philologist and high school teacher .

Emil Herkenrath, son of a factory owner, graduated from high school Adolfinum in Moers in 1878 . He studied classical philology and archeology at the University of Berlin and received his doctorate in 1902 with a thesis on the frieze of the Artemis temple of Magnesia am Mäander . Then he took part in the excavations in Miletus under Theodor Wiegand .

In 1907 he passed the state examination and did his probationary year at the high school in Colmar . From 1908 to 1943 he was a teacher for Latin and history at the grammar school in Essen and lived in Essen-Heisingen . Scientifically, he was mainly active in the field of Middle Latin philology . Herkenrath died in a bomb attack towards the end of the war.
