Emil Knodt

Emil Karl Wilhelm Knodt (born July 23, 1852 in Eppelsheim , † February 29, 1924 in Wahlrod ) was a German Protestant theologian and animal rights activist.

Life

Emil Knodt began studying theology at the State University of Giessen at the age of 16 after graduating from high school in 1869 at the Ludwig-Georgs-Gymnasium in Darmstadt . In 1874, at the age of 22, he completed his training at the Friedberg seminary . Then he worked as a senior helper with Johann Hinrich Wichern in the "Rauhen Haus" in Hamburg. In 1875 he passed the second theological exam. After the vicariate in Pfungstadt (Darmstadt district), he took over his first pastoral office in Rothenberg in 1878 . Together with his wife, who was a vegetarian, he was involved in the field of animal welfare. He is considered the first German writer on animal welfare and was editor of the magazine "Der Tier- und Menschenfreund" from 1878 to 1884. In 1883 he became a pastor in Münster / Westphalia, as well as a religion teacher and pastor in prison and in an asylum . At the same time he dealt with the Westphalian church history. Together with Friedrich von Bodelschwingh he founded the "Conference for Insane Pastoral Care" and was its chairman from 1889 to 1895. Became known through church history and pastoral publications, he received appointments to the Friedberg seminary and to the Magdeburg religious teacher convict, which he turned down. In 1898 he became director of the Theological Seminary in Herborn and remained so until his retirement in 1923. In 1904 he received an honorary theological doctorate from the University of Marburg .
