Emil Ludwig Löhr: Monastery near Rome, probably 1830s

Emil Ludwig Löhr was a son of the banker August Löhr, who moved to Vienna in 1818 . Here the son received his artistic training under Leopold Kupelwieser . Löhr went to Rome for further studies and, under the influence of Joseph Anton Koch , turned to landscape painting. Because of a persistent malaria disease, Löhr had to return to Germany from Italy in 1840.

He moved to Munich with his family . For many years he sought relief from his illness every summer in Gastein , where he painted many landscapes. In July 1849 Löhr visited Hamburg and attracted attention there with photographs of old etchings and copper engravings.
