Emil Waas

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Emil Waas (born July 13, 1919 in Wiesloch ; † November 27, 1981 in Östringen ) was a German author and commercial artist.

Captivity

During the Second World War, Emil Waas was a medical officer on the Eastern Front. He was taken prisoner by the Soviets in 1945 and did not return to his homeland in Baden until 1950. During the almost five years of imprisonment he created almost 1,000 miniature drawings, which were also smuggled out of the camps by fellow prisoners. He painted on the smallest scraps of paper from cement sacks, newspapers, forms, maps or calendars. When there was a lack of colored pencils or pencils, he would apply paint from leaves, grass, charcoal, soot, potato peels or his blood with his fingers, pointed pieces of wood or tufts of grass as a brush.

The British War Museum described his legacy from this period as the "largest collection of prisoner-of-war art in the world and in human history." A first exhibition took place in 2013 in Östringen. At the end of 2016 his miniatures will be exhibited in Trier and made available on the Internet.

After the war, Waas worked as a graphic designer and ran an advertising agency. He published books that dealt with examples of the practical use of the German language and the obvious misunderstanding of terms. The success of the works on style flowers led to several editions of the books. This is also based on the reader's recognition of their own faultiness. He used elwa as a pseudonym .

He is the father of the linguist and partly co-editor Margit Waas .
