Emil Wolff (born March 2, 1802 in Berlin , † September 29, 1879 in Rome ) was a German sculptor .

Career

Wolff studied from 1815 at the Berlin Art Academy and from 1818 with his uncle Johann Gottfried Schadow . In 1821 he won the academic prize with a relief, which enabled him to go to Rome in 1822, where he stayed from then on. However, he kept in contact with Germany and from Rome also procured many items for the Prussian royal collection.

In Wolff's works, which follow Thorwaldsen's classical direction , a fine sense of the beauty of form is reflected. Among his genre figures are above all "The hunter as a bird operator", "Hunter with dog", "The warrior who puts on the greaves", "The seated fisherman", "The shepherdess and the shepherd boy", "The spinner" and " Die Tambourinschlägerin “as particularly good.

Among his mythological representations are considered successful: " Midas as judge" (relief, 1825), the marble relief of Charitas (1830), Telephos suckled by the doe as a child, the group of Hebe and Ganymede (1834), Thetis the Achilles the dated Bringing forged weapons to Vulcan, the hunting nymph (1835), Diana after the end of the hunt for the arch supported by calm nurturing (1838), a group of amazons in marble, Prometheus with the heavenly fire in a pipe (1844), the marble group: Victoria, the youth in instructing history (on the Schlossbrücke in Berlin, 1846), the marble group: Jephtha and his daughter (1858), Psyche after Cupid's escape, Judith (1868, Berlin National Gallery). Wolff also executed several busts and portrait statues of famous people, such as Bertel Thorwaldsen, Johann Joachim Winckelmann , Barthold Georg Niebuhr and Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina .

In 1854 King Friedrich Wilhelm IV bought the sculpture “Najade” from Emil Wolff. In 1985 the badly damaged figure had to be stored. In 2017 a replica of the sculpture was installed in the Sicilian Garden in Sanssouci.
