Emilia Smechowski (born in August 1983 when Emilka Elżbieta Śmiechowska in Wejherowo , German Wejherowo , Poland ) is a Polish-German journalist.

Life

In 1988 Emilia Smechowski emigrated with her parents from Wejherowo, a small town near Danzig , to West Berlin , where the parents found employment as anesthetists. The family received German citizenship. Smechowski studied opera singing at the Hanns Eisler University of Music in Berlin (without a degree) and then Romance studies at the Humboldt University in Berlin ( Bachelor of Arts ).

Initially, Smechowski worked as an editor for the daily newspaper (taz) and has since worked as a freelance writer and reporter. Smechowski and her daughter moved to Gdansk for a year to work on her book Return to Poland , which was published in 2019 . She now lives and works in Berlin again.

Awards

In 2015 she was awarded the German Reporter Prize and in 2016 the Konrad Duden Journalist Prize and the German-Polish Tadeusz Mazowiecki Journalist Prize. In 2017 she received the German Reporter Award again .
