Emiliano Sampaio

Emiliano Cardoso Sampaio (* 1984 in São Paulo ) is a Brazilian jazz musician (guitar, trombone), composer and arranger . He has received several student awards from jazz magazine DownBeat . Sampaio has lived in Graz since 2012 .

Career

Emiliano Sampaio studied guitar at the University of Campinas (Brazil) and graduated with a Master of Arts . With his band Meretrio, founded in 2003, he recorded several CDs in Brazil with Gustavo Boni on bass and Luis André on drums, before moving to Graz in 2012 to study composition with Ed Partyka and Michael Abene at the University of Music and Performing Arts . Here Sampaio began to write pieces for his nonet Mereneu Project , Big Band and larger ensembles. The collaboration with the Meretrio , which also moved to Austria, continued, occasionally with the help of the saxophonist and flutist Heinrich von Kalnein . Sampaio also studied trombone with Ed Neumeister .

As a band leader, composer and arranger, Sampaio has worked with the following formations, among others: Metropole Orkest , hr-Bigband , Fete Huppe (Hanover), Jazz Orchester Regensburg, Copenhagen Big Band, HRT Big Band (Zagreb). He is also engaged as a musician in various band projects, such as Saint Chameleon, Sound Pollution Eclectic, Franziskus and Vincent Veneman. For the Brazilian singer and guitarist Badi Assad , he made the brass arrangements and trombone for the album Between Love and Luck in 2012 .

In 2019 Sampaio presented his electro jazz sound on tour through Europe with his trio, with timbres changed by electronic overlays on the trombone and guitar; But he also performed with his large-format Mega Mereneu Project at the Bavarian Jazzweekend in Regensburg.
