Emilianos Zacharopoulos

Emilianos Zacharopoulos ( Greek Αιμιλιανός Ζαχαρόπουλος , born April 12, 1915 in Heybeliada near Istanbul; † September 8, 2011 in Athens ) was a Turkish clergyman and Orthodox metropolitan of Belgium .

Life

In 1936 he graduated from the Theological Institute of Halki (now Turkey) and was ordained deacon for the parish of Saints Constantine and Helena in Istanbul in 1937 and later worked as a deacon in the headquarters of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. In 1951 he was appointed Vicar General of the Ecumenical Patriarchate by the Patriarch of Constantinople Athinagoras .

In 1959 he was appointed Metropolitan of Selevkia , but expelled from Turkey in 1964 . In 1969 he was elected the first Orthodox Metropolitan of Belgium and Exarch of the Netherlands and Luxembourg of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople and consecrated on November 11, 1969 in the Orthodox Cathedral of the Holy Archangels in Brussels.

In December 1982 he became Metropolitan of Kos , which, although belonging to the Greek Dodecanese Islands, is under the jurisdiction of the Patriarchate of Constantinople and not the Church of Greece . In 2009 he retired.
