Emilio Willems

Emilio Willems , until 1933 Emil Willems , (born August 18, 1905 in Cologne , † November 19, 1997 in Nashville , Tennessee ) was a German-American sociologist and ethnologist .

Life

Willems attended an old-language grammar school in Cologne and from 1924 studied economics, sociology and ethnology at the University of Cologne and the University of Berlin . Important academic teachers were Alfred Vierkandt and Richard Thurnwald .

In 1931 he moved to Brazil, where he first taught at a Catholic seminary and from 1936 taught sociology at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of São Paulo , where he was appointed professor in 1937.

Willems moved to the USA in 1949, where he taught until his retirement (1974) as a professor of sociology and ethnology at Vanderbilt University in Nashville.
