Emily Howard (born February 23, 1979 in Liverpool ) is a British composer.

Life

Emily Howard learned as a child to play chess and was from 1990 to multiple British chess champion in her age group, most recently in the female U18 in 1996. It bears the title of a Master candidate of the women (Woman Candidate Master) and played from 1994 to 2002 at the Invicta Knights Maidstone , the North West Eagles and the Wessex Chess Club a total of five seasons in Division 1 of the Four Nations Chess League .

Howard learned to play the cello . She studied mathematics and computer science at Lincoln College , Oxford with a BA degree. She also studied composition at the Royal Northern College of Music and received her PhD in composition from the University of Manchester . Howard taught at the Bridge Academy in Hackney and at the University of Liverpool . She is Senior Lecturer in Composition at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and also works at the Oxford e-Research Center.

In 2012 she received a British Composer Award for her composition Mesmerism . The orchestral concert Torus premiered at the BBC Proms in 2016 .
