Emmy Meixner-Wülker (born June 17, 1927 in Eppstein as Emma Maria Schiemann ; † November 21, 2008 in Bayreuth ) was the founder and long-term chairwoman of the self-help association for members of suicide ( AGUS ) in Bayreuth.

Life

Meixner-Wülker was confronted with the subject of suicide twice in her life . As a young girl she found out about the suicide of a merchant woman in her hometown who had not endured the forced divorce from her Jewish husband. In 1963, her first husband, with whom they had two children, committed suicide.

In order to overcome her concern, she devoted herself to telephone counseling for years . There she took care of relatives of suicides in particular. In 1983 Meixner-Wülker joined the German Society for Suicide Prevention . Finally, in 1989, she founded the self-help group AGUS in Bayreuth, based on the model of the US survivor movement. The aim of the association is, in addition to the individual care of the bereaved, to bring the fate of the relatives of a suicide more to the fore. The founding of the movement met with nationwide interest. In 1995 the group became a registered association operating throughout Germany.

Meixner-Wülker has been awarded several prizes for her voluntary work. In autumn 2000 Meixner-Wülker gave up the chairmanship of the association for health reasons.
