Emmy Werner (also Emmy Elisabeth Werner-Jacobsen ; born May 26, 1929 in Eltville am Rhein ; † October 12, 2017 ) was an American developmental psychologist . She received her Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska and was a professor in the Department of Human and Community Development at UC Davis .

Scientific work

Werner achieved international fame for her longitudinal study on 698 children on the Hawaiian island of Kauai . The study, published in 1977, showed that children exposed to biological / medical and social risk factors (such as childbirth complications or poverty) develop more negatively on average than children who are not exposed to such risk factors. For example, they are more likely to be delinquent, mentally and physically less healthy, and later on less successful professionally. However, the most noticed result of Werner's study was that there were also children who develop positively despite numerous risk factors. That was the case for about a third of these children. These children are very resilient .
