Emory King

Emory King (born February 22, 1931 in Jacksonville , Florida, † August 14, 2007 in Tropical Park, Belize ) was a Belizean writer and journalist. King served his country in numerous capacities, including as a national film commissioner.

Life

At the age of 22, King started a sailing trip with some friends on a yacht from the USA. The group was shipwrecked off the coast of Belize. After King recovered from the accident, he decided to stay in Belize. He worked in tourism advertising, for the Chamber of Commerce and as a businessman.

King, the reigning since 1954 joined People's United Party of. He had a close relationship with George Cadle Price , the first Prime Minister of Belize. In 1958 King helped German-speaking Mennonites expelled from Mexico to settle in what was then British Honduras .

From the 1970s until his death, King was a columnist for the Belize Times , the weekly newspaper for the People's United Party. He produced documentaries about Belize and played minor supporting roles in two feature films shot there. In 1998 he was made the country's honorary film commissioner.

King wrote several books, including Emory King's Drivers' Guide to Belize and The Great Story of Belize in two volumes. He was head of the Belize Historical Society for a time . His interpretation of Belizean history (e.g. in King's book Belize, 1798 - The Road to Glory about the battle off the island of St. George's Caye) was contradicted by the Belizean writer and journalist Evan X Hyde, who also held King's lack of knowledge of the sources (e.g. regarding the devastating Cyclone in September 1931).

King was married to Elisa King and the father of several children, son Alex of whom died earlier than himself.

King died on August 14, 2007 at his home in Tropical Park near Hattieville .
