Emory Stephen Bogardus
Emory Stephen Bogardus (born February 21, 1882 near Belvidere, Illinois , † August 21, 1973 ) was an American sociologist and the 21st President of the American Sociological Association .
Bogardus graduated from Northwestern University with a bachelor's degree in 1908 and a master's degree in 1909 , and was awarded a Ph.D. in 1910 by the University of Chicago. PhD. In 1911 he became a sociology professor at the University of Southern California .
In 1925 Bogardus, who researched beyond sociology to include social psychology , presented the scale of social distance (Bogardus scale), a Guttman scale , which he had developed . It is a method of measuring attitudes .
He served as president of the American Sociological Association in 1931.
