The figure of eight knot is a knot with various uses. It is mainly used in seamanship as a stopper knot at the end of the rope. In heraldry it is found as a love knot . The name comes from its shape, which looks like the number eight .
application
The figure-eight knot serves as a thickening of one end of the rope, for example to prevent it from passing through an eyelet , a block or a rope or trap stopper . When sailing is at the end of pods and traps always a figure eight knot tied. If a sheet under load rushes out of control , this represents a considerable danger for the crew and the ship becomes difficult to steer because of the flapping sail. Noisy traps can hardly be repaired at sea, as the line runs up inside the mast on most ships.
The eight knot can be easily loosened again even after heavy loads. It is part of the examination material for sailing and sport boat driving licenses .

When tied in the bay , a very safe rope knot is created. Figure of eight knot (loop) .
To connect two ropes, the figure of eight knot (connection) is used .
The figure eight knot in teardrop shape is also used as a connecting knot.
With an additional turn, a nine knot is created . If the eye is not turned, an overhand knot is created .
