At the end of 2018, there were large-scale campaigns by the movement “ End of Terrain ”. a. advocates climate justice in the Rhenish lignite district . The Civil Disobedience Actions was the fourth event of its kind after 2015 , 2016 and 2017 . All were directed against coal-fired power generation and, citing climate justice and climate protection, called for the "immediate coal phase-out ".

The action periods were on the one hand October 6, 2018 as a protest for the preservation of the Hambach Forest with smaller actions in the contested forest next to the open pit , the focus of the activities was in the period from October 25 to 29, 2018.

On October 27, 2018, a coal excavator near the village of Morschenich and the tracks of the Hambachbahn were blocked by several thousand activists for 22 hours in order to symbolically stop the supply of coal to the power plants. At least 5,000 people took part in these protests. The Aachen public prosecutor's office is investigating around 400 demonstration participants who wanted to penetrate the Inden open-cast mine because of breach of the peace .

The protests continued in 2019 .
