Ender tunnel
The Ender Tunnel is a 944 m long railway tunnel in the Dortmund and Herdeck city area (district of Ende ) under the main ridge of the Ardey Mountains . It describes an S-shaped course with curves at its ends and a straight section between the two curves. The profile of the tunnel is designed for two tracks , but is currently only used by one track.
The Ender Tunnel was built between 1870 and 1871 by the Rheinische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft along the Dortmund Süd – Düsseldorf-Derendorf (“Rhenish route”) line and is now used by the RB 52 ( Volmetalbahn ) in the northern section of Dortmund – Hagen– Lüdenscheid .
A special feature of the building is the head of the Greek god Hades as a relief on the keystone of the southern portal . The interpretation of the tunnel portal as an entrance to the underworld (hell) is, because of the negative connotation, rather unusual for a traffic structure, on whose safety and reliability the users should trust.
