Endost

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As endostium even endosteum called, refers to the inner periosteum . In contrast to the outer periosteum , the periosteum , endosteum is the inside of the bone and coats the surfaces of the bone trabeculae and the medullary cavity .

The endosteum is a single layer of connective tissue cells and is covered by a thin layer of collagenous and reticular fibers. It contains connective tissue stem cells ( mesenchymal cells ), which can differentiate into fibroblasts and osteoblasts if necessary . The bone-degrading osteoclasts arise from blood stem cells and reach the endostrum via the blood. These cells play an important role in bone remodeling ( remodeling ) and for the bone healing .
