The uranium deposit of the Ranger uranium mine was discovered in 1969. 1974, there was a joint venture of Peko Wallsend Operations Limited (Peko), Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australia Limited , the discoverers of uranium deposits, and the federal Australian Atomic Energy Commission (AAEC). In 1975 the Australian federal government took over half of the uranium ore body and in 1978 Ranger Uranium Environmental Inquiry (Fox Report) appeared, in which concerns about the mining were also formulated. In 1978 the Australian Federal Government and the Northern Council reached an agreement regarding the mining and the Ranger Uranium Mines Pty Ltd became the project leader. In August 1979 the Australian federal government sold its stake and Energy Resources Australia acquired 25% of the shares. To mine the deposit, Energy Resources of Australia Ltd was incorporated as a public company in 1980 , with the state-owned AAEC selling its stake for AUD $ 125 million. ERA mined the first uranium oxide from the Ranger uranium mine on August 13, 1981 and Ranger Uranium Mines Pty Ltd became a subsidiary of ERA.

In 1981, ERA acquired the Jabiluka uranium ore body from Pancontinental Mining for AUD 125 million, located approximately 20 km from the Ranger uranium mine. While there have been deposit explorations carried out of the Jabiluka uranium deposit, but a uranium mining was not carried out because the Aborigines of Mirarr conducted violent world's attention protests, did not give consent for mining and Australian Labor Party after its election victory in 1983, a three-mine policy Introduced uranium mines that Jabiluka ignored.

From 1987 to 1988 ERA was interested in the takeover of North Broken Hill Holdings Ltd , which was intertwined with Peco , and acquired 66% of the shares in North Broken Hill Holding , which was taken over by the Rio Tinto Group in 2000 . In 1998 the largest uranium mining company in the world, the Canadian Cameco , received uranium ore from the ranger mine, possibly giving up 6.69% ERA shares and Cogema bought 7.76% shares from other shareholders.

In the late 2005 year, there was a reorganization of the shares of ERA, which were held in a holding company by Japan Australia Uranium Resources Development (JAURD), Cameco and Cogema and lost the status of a non-listed company. The three companies sold their shares and that brought 31.61% of tradable shares to the stock exchange.

Current

In 2009 the company mined 100,000 tons of uranium in the Ranger uranium mine, making this uranium mine the second largest mining volume in the world after Cameco's Arthur River project . That was 9% of the total world uranium production and ERA was the 5th largest uranium producer in the world. The uranium was delivered directly to nuclear power plants in Asia, Europe and North America. According to current calculations, the deposit will be exhausted in 25 years at the current mining volume.
