The angel is a popular common figure in heraldry and is often used as a talking shield figure .

Forms of representation

Talking is z. B. the coat of arms of the political municipality Engelberg (canton Obwalden in Switzerland). The depiction of the angel differs from other figures by having wings on a person's back. The angel is popular in the coat of arms and as a shield holder and the description of the coat of arms clarifies the type of angel (example archangel ). The floating or the standing representation of the angel is possible. Often an angel also holds a cross or other objects.

Also, only the angel's head is often included in the coat of arms. This is also called the cherub head and, according to the Jewish and Christian conception, is a head with attached wings.
