Pastor Engelbert Kleiser

Engelbert Kleiser (born October 24, 1842 in Schollach , † October 14, 1931 in Bickesheim near Durmersheim ) was a Roman Catholic priest of the Archdiocese of Freiburg. To this day, he is venerated by the faithful as the “German pastor of Ars”.

Life

Engelbert Kleiser came from Schollach in the Upper Black Forest. He was born there in 1842. His younger brother Johannes Baptist Kleiser (1845-1919) also became a priest and was the founder of the Kanisius Sisters .

On August 4, 1869, Engelbert Kleiser was appointed by Auxiliary Bishop Lothar von Kübel , since April 1868 Archbishopric Administrator of the Archdiocese of Freiburg i. Br., Ordained a priest.

In Hagnau on Lake Constance he was chaplain to Pastor Heinrich Hansjakob, the well-known writer from Haslach in the Kinzig valley.

He worked as a pastor in Göschweiler near Löffingen.

In 1898 Engelbert Kleiser came to the pilgrimage church of Maria Bickesheim near Durmersheim in 1898. There he took on a beneficiary position .

The residents and pilgrims revered him like a saint because of his pious, selfless, and helpful manner. During his time in Bickesheim, the pilgrimage was revived and its popularity grew steadily. He has been blind for the last 30 years as a result of an eye disease. He is popularly known to this day as the "Blind Pastor of Bickesheim".

When Engelbert Kleiser died in 1931, he was buried on the south facade of the pilgrimage church with great sympathy from the population from Durmersheim and the surrounding area.

In Durmersheim, Engelbert-Kleiser-Strasse, which leads off from Bickesheimer Platz, was named after the popular pastor. In the Durmersheim local history museum, an Engelbert-Kleiser corner has been set up with the pastor's personal items, which reminds of the blessed work of the blind pastor.
