Engelbert Willmes

Engelbert Willmes (* 1786 in Cologne ; † 1866 there ) was a German portrait painter , etcher and art dealer .

Life

Willmes, son of the lawyer Johann Benedikt Willmes , was initially a student of Ferdinand Franz Wallraf at the central school in Cologne. From 1808 to 1812 he studied in the atelier of Jacques-Louis David and Jean-Baptiste Regnault in Paris . He was also a student at the École des beaux-arts . After 1812 Willmes worked as an art dealer in Cologne, and since 1822 with his own art dealer. In 1817 he became honorary supervisor of the paintings and works of art in the Jesuit building in Cologne. In 1839 he was a founding member of the Kölnischer Kunstverein and left his collection of paintings for the first exhibition there.
