The England Air Force Base is a former stronghold of the US Air Force in Louisiana . The base is 7 kilometers northwest of Alexandria in New Orleans . Initially it was referred to as the Alexandria Army Base, but on June 23, 1955 it was named after Lieutenant Colonel John Brook England (1923-1954).
The base was established on October 21, 1942, and during World War II it was used to train pilots on the Boeing B-17 . It was shut down on September 23, 1946, although a small cadre of the army and air forces at Alexandria Municipal Airport was still employed until the late 1940s.
On October 10, 1950, the base was reactivated by the US Air Force in connection with the Korean War . The base was shut down again in 1992 and is currently called Alexandria International Airport .
