history

From 1931 the Shreveport Downtown Airport served as the commercial airport for the city of Shreveport. After the Second World War , ever larger aircraft were introduced, so that an extension of the runways was necessary. However, this was not possible due to the location of the airport. Therefore, the construction of a new airport was planned.

In May 1947, the City of Shreveport provided their $ 2.4 million stake for the new airport's passenger terminal . In 1948 an architecture firm was commissioned to search for a location. In 1949, the current location was chosen in a vote. The new airport opened on July 6, 1952 as Greater Shreveport Municipal Airport . Subsequently, commercial air traffic was relocated from Downtown Airport to the new airport.

In 1971 a new passenger terminal with two concourses and a new administration building was opened. The airport was also renamed Shreveport Regional Airport . The old passenger terminal has been used by the airport's fixed base operator since then . In the 1980s, Rockwell International began using a new hangar to modify military aircraft. In 1998 the groundbreaking ceremony took place for a US $ 30 million expansion and renovation of the passenger terminal. Today's entrance area of the passenger terminal was also built. The work was completed in November 1999.

In the fall of 2001, Boeing, which had since taken over the Rockwell International Corporation, stopped using the large hangar. ExpressJet Airlines had already signed a long-term rental agreement for the hangar in August 2001 . From November 2001, 40 Embraer ERJ 145 regional aircraft were serviced in the hangar . The hangar was expanded by ExpressJet Airlines and an additional, smaller hangar was rented before the airline stopped aircraft maintenance at Shreveport Regional Airport in November 2017.

In 2018, the security controls , which were previously split between two locations, were combined at one location. In May 2018, the cargo airline Western Global Airlines announced that it would service its wide-body aircraft at Shreveport International Airport. Hangar 40 has been used for this purpose since July 2018.
