The English Shepherd ( en . For English Shepherd ) is a dog breed from the United States that is not recognized by the FCI . The breed has been recognized by the UKC since 1927 .

Origin and history

The English Shepherd is believed to have descended from Collie- type dogs who came to North America with the English immigrants. The modern type developed through crossing other dog breeds such as border collies .

description

The English Shepherd is a medium-sized dog built for speed and agility. According to the standard, his skills as a herding dog should play a more important role in the assessment than appearance.

The dog has a shoulder height of 46 to 58 cm and a weight of 18 to 27 kg. The fur is moderately long to long, short on the head and legs , in the colors black and tan , three-colored, sable with white or black and white. Disqualifications are merle , a fur to more than one third white, albinism and pure black. The fur is practically self-cleaning and weatherproof. The rod is relatively long, but stubby rods are also found.

The head is of medium length, slightly rounded between the ears, carried high, with a moderately pronounced stop . The muzzle is moderately wide, neither too narrow nor too wide, with snug lips . The distance between the tip of the nose and the stop is about the same as between the stop and the occiput. The English Shepherd has a scissor bite , and an overshot and undershot bite are considered serious defects. The tilt ears are close to the head. The eyes are dark to medium brown, fairly round, slightly slanted.

use

He is a good watchdog , as well as a good driving and herding dog, who can also steer cattle , which he pinches on the heels when necessary. The fact that he also fits in well with the family makes the English Shepherd a good all-purpose dog who, however, needs enough activity as a working dog.

Health

Since the English Shepherd is related to the other Collies, the MDR1 defect occurs in this breed as well. In one study, 14 percent of the 91 dogs examined were heterozygous for the defective allele , slightly less than one percent were homozygous .
