The Enriquillo Lake ( Spanish Lago Enriquillo ) is a 375 km² salt lake in the west of the Dominican Republic near the border with Haiti in the Parque Nacional Isla Cabritos . It is the largest lake in the Antilles. He is named after Enriquillo , a chief of the Taíno . In the lake lies the 25 km² island of Cabritos , the Taíno's last refuge.
The lake is a former estuary between the Sierra de Neiba and Sierra Baoruco mountain ranges , which is now 40 meters below sea level. It is the lowest point in the Caribbean. Due to its formation, remains of hard corals can still be found on the banks . Rhinoceros iguanas , pointed crocodiles and flamingos live on the shores of the lake and on Cabritos .
