Ensalada

The Ensalada ( cat. "Salat", "Mischmasch") is a Spanish musical form of the Renaissance in the style of the Quodlibets .

A Spanish dictionary from 1611 characterizes the ensalada as “a genre of songs that have different meters and are like rag carpets , collected by different authors. Maestros de capilla put them together to celebrate the feast of Christmas ”.

It is a polyphonic, usually four-part form of composition and got its name because of the mixture of different elements: familiar melodies, different languages (Latin, Spanish, Catalan, Portuguese, Italian, etc.), different types (complicated and popular; religious and profane), different Characters (dramatic or festive), different textures ( monophonic , polyphonic or homophonic ). Spiritual and liturgical alternate with secular, always serious texts. They have a religious-dramatic basic trait and thematize the struggle of good against evil.

The majority of the composers from the Kingdom of Aragón of this era created works of this genre and took care of their development, such as Mateu Fletxa el Vell , Mateu Fletxa el Jove , Juan Castelló , Pere Alberc i Vila , Joan Brudieu , Bartomeu Càrceres , etc. a.
