Relief collector Wupper

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The relief collector Wupper , also known as "Wuppersammler" for short, is a canal for surface water or mixed water in the mountainous city of Wuppertal in North Rhine-Westphalia . It is the most significant single civil engineering project in Wuppertal (if you take into account that the expansion of the historic sewer network spanned decades and was only carried out in sections) and one of the most extensive canal construction projects in North Rhine-Westphalia today. When planning the budget (there are different information and sources about this) extended to between 143 and 175 million euros.

Historical background

Construction of a branching structure on Robert-Daum-Platz (2008)

In the early years , the Wupper valley was one of the most prosperous regions in the German Empire . At the turn of the 20th century, the two large cities of Elberfeld and Barmen , which were still independent at the time, recorded very high population and industrial growth, which was accompanied by a corresponding increase in wastewater pollution. It was therefore inevitable to set up a regulated sewage disposal system instead of discharging the dirty water directly into the Wupper . The most important structure of this expanded sewage system over the years was the still existing old main collector, which took up the sewage to be treated in order to feed it to the " Elberfeld-Barmen sewage treatment plant " in Buchenhofen near Rutenbeck, which was completed in 1906 . The surface water was discharged untreated into the Wupper or into receiving waters and streams, which mostly flow into the Wupper. Even today, wastewater disposal in Wuppertal is mainly carried out in a separation system.

The historic main collector was built with a very steep gradient. However, this results in a high flow rate, which makes revision and repair work practically impossible. In addition, it happened several times in the run-up to the construction of the relief collector that surface water contaminated with pollutants z. B. after oil or chemical accidents or contaminated extinguishing water after fires uncleared in the Wupper reached. In the 1980s, the city council of Wuppertal therefore made the decision to build the relief collector to absorb and store (possibly contaminated) surface water, to dispense it in doses to the sewage treatment plant and to purify it accordingly. The total storage capacity is around 42,000 m³ of water. Another task is the at least temporary relief or drainage of the historical main collector in order to carry out urgently required revision work. Since 1997 Wuppertaler Stadtwerke GmbH has been responsible for wastewater disposal in Wuppertal and thus also for the further construction of the relief collector.

description

Construction of the collector began on December 21, 1990. The canal itself, the actual core of the construction project, was completed in November 2001. However, there were also around 60 special structures in the vicinity such as B. to create inflow channels or branch structures that were only completed in July 2010.

The canal begins in Barmen approximately at the level of the Alter Markt and runs predominantly to the right of the Wupper (i.e. north) parallel to the river under federal road 7 at a depth of around 10-15 meters below street level and thus also below the level of the old main collector. After about 9.7 kilometers, the relief collector ends in a storage basin with 3800 m³ at the Buchenhofen municipal sewage treatment plant in Buchenhofen near Sonnborn .

The construction was divided into six lots with twelve tunneling sections. For this purpose, pits were dug down to the bottom of the future canal in several places, into which the tunneling machines could be lowered. The drive had to be carried out under compressed air due to the high groundwater level . Nevertheless, there were unforeseen water ingress during construction.
