Entrance Grave from Penannce

Idealized representation of the Entrance grave by Penannce by Borlase

The Penannce Entrance Grave (known locally as Giant's House ), partially stripped of its stone mound , stands in the pastureland about a kilometer southwest of Zennor in Cornwall , England . Entrance Graves ( German "entrance graves " ) are found in Cornwall (14) and on the Isles of Scilly  (over 70). Five plants are located in County Waterford in Ireland .

William Copeland Borlase (1848–1899) recognized a similar structure in Pennance as early as 1872 as in the Brane plant . 1950 lists Glyn Daniel (1914–1986) in his description of the chamber tombs Pennance as one of only four Entrance Graves known on the mainland.

The cairn is built on a slope and its architecture has been adapted accordingly. The southern curbs are higher than the northern ones. The mound is about 8.0 m in diameter and 2.0 m high, with a lot of cairn material on the surface and several large curbs around the perimeter. In contrast to other intact Entrance graves, there are very large stones on the hill, especially in the southeast. Some are larger than the smaller ones of the in-situ curbs.

The highly eccentric Pennance chamber is over 4.0 m long, 1.4 m wide and about 0.75 m high. As usual with Entrance graves, the chamber extends beyond the middle of the cairn. The chamber opens in the southeast, where it is drawn in on one side in width. The walls are made of dry stone . The ceiling consists of five panels that rest on the side walls. They gradually rise towards the rear, creating a wedge shape of the chamber ceiling. It is unclear whether the present floor level is original, but at the chamber height of 0.75 m it is only possible to crawl into the chamber.
