Environmental Product Declaration
An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a Type III environmental declaration . This provides quantified environmental information from the life cycle of a product or service in order to enable comparisons between products or services with the same function. An EPD is based on independently verified data from life cycle assessments, life cycle assessments or information modules that conform to the ISO 14040 series of standards and may contain further information. The Institut Bauen und Umwelt e. V. and the Institute for Window Technology in Rosenheim are publicly recognized program operators in Germany who create and publish EPDs for the construction sector. Furthermore, the European association of the plastics industry, Plastics Europe , has developed a methodology to create an EPD based on the existing eco-profiles.
standardization
How type III environmental declarations are drawn up is regulated in accordance with ISO 14025 (environmental labels and declarations - type III environmental declarations - principles and procedures). In addition, ISO 21930 (Sustainable Building - Environmental Declaration of Building Products) specifically deals with the declaration of building products.
Information included
In an EPD must
- the life cycle inventory (LCI Life Cycle Inventory Analysis)
- the impact assessment (LCIA Life Cycle Impact Assessment carried out if any)
- as well as other indicators (e.g. on the type and amount of waste produced )
be included.
The life cycle inventory inventory (LCI) contains information on resource consumption , e.g. B. Energy, water and renewable resources as well as emissions to air, water and soil.
The impact assessment (LCIA) is based on the results of the inventory analysis and specifies specific environmental impacts.
these are
- Greenhouse effect
- Destruction of the stratospheric ozone layer
- Acidification (of water and soil)
- Eutrophication
- Formation of photochemical oxidants
- Depletion of fossil energy resources
- Depletion of mineral resources.
In addition, further information on environmental issues (e.g. hazards and risks to human health) and / or data on the use, function and performance of a product can be given.
use
EPDs are e.g. B. used in connection with the assessment system for sustainable building (BNB) of the federal government and the German seal of approval for sustainable building DGNB . Among other things, they serve as a data basis for calculating the ecological balance ( gray energy ) and / or the energy consumption of a building. This means that different variants of the same building can be compared with regard to ecological quality as early as the planning phase.
