Enzo Tiezzi

Enzo Tiezzi (born February 4, 1938 in Siena ; † June 25, 2010 ibid) was an Italian chemist ( physical chemistry ).

Tiezzi studied chemistry at the University of Florence with a Laureate degree and from that time on was particularly concerned with nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). His teachers included Giorgio Piccardi (1895–1972), a student of Walter Nernst , and Enzo Ferroni (1921–2007). He taught for four years at the University of Cagliari and was in the USA with the physicist Sam Weissman and the biologist Barry Commoner in 1966/67 with a Fulbright scholarship . After returning, he qualified as a professor in physical chemistry in 1968 and was professor in Siena from 1970.

Like his teacher Piccardi, he dealt with oscillating chemical reactions and was in contact with Ilya Prigogine's Brussels school and applied his theory of dissipative systems.

In the 1980s he was part of an international group of scientists (like Ilya Prigogine) who advocated sustainable development and he was also publicly active as an opponent of nuclear power during this time and advocated environmental issues in general. He also dealt with complex dynamic systems in ecology (where he coined the term Confined Ontic Open Systems, COOS for short, reminiscent of the island of Hippocrates' birth) and economics and also published in economics (e.g. a proposal for a new economic indicator ISEW).

He wrote over 500 scientific articles and 20 books, including some popular science. He also published with his wife Nadia Marchettini.

In 2004 he received the Blaise Pascal Medal and the Mangia d'Oro from the city of Siena.
