Giorgio Piccardi
Giorgio Piccardi (born October 13, 1895 in Florence , † 1972 ) was an Italian chemist . Piccardi was professor and head of the Institute of Physical Chemistry at the University of Florence . Among other things, he worked on the influence of astronomical factors on the course of chemical reactions and developed the Piccardi test named after him.
Life
Piccardi studied chemistry in Florence in 1913, then mathematics in Turin in 1914, before taking part in World War I as a mountain trooper from 1915 to 1918 . Shortly after his return to Turin, he went back to Florence, where he received his diploma in chemistry in 1922. In 1934 he became an assistant for inorganic chemistry , in 1938 he was appointed professor for physical chemistry in Genoa . In 1946 he became head of the newly founded Institute for Physical Chemistry in Florence.
The Piccardi test
According to Piccardi , when two chemical substances are brought together using the same method, they always react in the same way in theory. In 1939 he came to the conclusion that the fluctuations in reaction he observed were not due to chance: in his opinion, they came from the constantly changing behavior of water under the influence of cosmic factors such as solar activity , moon phases , position of the earth in the Milky Way and the position of the two largest planets in the solar system. He used bismuth chloride oxide in his daily experiments and observed the rate of precipitation when it was poured into distilled water . In several hundred thousand individual tests, he found a close correlation between the rate of precipitation of bismuth oxychloride and solar activity ( correlation coefficient about 0.9). Furthermore, the values of the precipitations not shielded by a Faraday cage after chromospheric eruptions showed an increase of more than 20%.
