Epaminondas Thomopoulos

Epaminondas Thomopoulos ( Greek Επαμεινώνδας Θωμόπουλος ; * 1878 in Patra ; † January 4, 1976 in Athens ) was a Greek painter and university professor.

Thomopoulos studied painting in Italy. He was one of the early Greek impressionists . For many years Thomopoulos was a professor at the Athens School of Fine Arts and its director from 1948 to 1949. He had previously been elected to the Academy of Athens in 1945 and was President of the Academy from 1962.

Most of his works are inspired by nature. Many of his paintings can be found in the National Gallery of Greece in Athens and the Municipal Gallery of Patra. In 1996 the city of Patra honored him with a major retrospective. One of his most famous works is the oil painting “The Beginning of Autumn”.
