Epaphroditus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Epaphroditus (Greek Ἐπαφρόδιτος) was a close colleague, brother and colleague of Paul .

Epaphroditus was sent to prison (probably in Rome ) by the church in Philippi with some gifts to Paul . As a result, Paul was completely provided for there. On the way, Epaphroditus became terminally ill shortly before the destination. But he recovered and was a faithful servant to Paul while he was in prison. He was distressed that the church in Philippi had heard that he was seriously ill, so Paul sent him back with a letter. Epaphroditus is mentioned twice in the letter to the Philippians: Phil 2.25  EU and Phil 4.18  EU .

Epaphroditus is counted among the seventy disciples . He is venerated as a saint ; his feast day is March 22nd .

According to legend, an Epaphroditus was also the first bishop of Terracina , who is said to have been installed there by Peter . But even if this Epaphroditus should be historical, it is doubtful whether he is identical with the Epaphroditus from Philippi.

The name Epaphroditos originally meant " favorite of Aphrodite ", later simply "lovely" or "loving".
