Ephemera

Printed invitation

Ephemera comes from the Greek and is made up of two components which together express that something does not last longer than a day. What is meant are things that are intended for a single or short-term use. In the narrower sense, only paper products are meant. Examples of ephemera are letters , postcards , advertisements , tickets , posters , placards , orange paper , stocks , bookmarks , greeting cards and other small print items .

A broader definition includes all printed, pressed, punched or stamped things, including things made of materials such as cardboard , metal or plastic .

There is a large group of collectors (ephemerists) who either specialize in a certain type of object (for example beer coaster ) or collect different types of ephemera. The term is much more widespread in the Anglo-American region and is therefore better known; large auction houses and museums also display collections of ephemera there, and in England there is even an academic institute that deals with ephemera research, the Center for Ephemera Studies at the University of Reading .
