Epiphyllum lepidocarpum is a species of plant in the genus Epiphyllum from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet lepidocarpum means '(Latin lepidocarpus) with scales on the fruits'.

description

Epiphyllum lepidocarpum has a shrubby growth. The main cylindrical shoots are woody. The light green flattened or three-winged side shoots are somewhat thick, not particularly stiff and 2 to 3 centimeters wide. The areoles are covered with small scales. They carry wool and only a few thorns .

The long funnel-shaped white flowers are up to 20 centimeters long and appear on the side. The purple-red fruits are covered with long scales and are up to 9 centimeters long.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Epiphyllum lepidocarpum is common in Costa Rica at altitudes of 1600 to 3000 meters. The first description as Phyllocactus lepidocarpus was published in 1902 by Frédéric Albert Constantin Weber . Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose put the species in the genus Epiphyllum in 1913 .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Endangered (EN) ," d. H. listed as endangered.
