Equus hydruntinus , also known as the European wild ass , is an extinct species of horse that was foundin western Eurasiafrom the mid- Pleistocene to the early Holocene . It first appears in the fossil record 350,000 years agoand only disappears during the Holocene.

During the late Pleistocene, the species was widespread in Europe from Spain to almost the German North Sea coast and in western Asia eastwards to present-day Iran. Morphologically, it differed from today's wild asses and half-donkeys mainly through the structure of the molars and the rather short nasal cavities , but resembled the latter more closely. Genetic studies also indicate a close relationship with the Asiatic half-asses ( Equus hemionus ).
