Erdal Arıkan

Erdal Arıkan (* 1958 in Ankara ) is a Turkish computer scientist and professor of electrical engineering and electronics at Bilkent University in Ankara. He is known for introducing polar codes and making a breakthrough in coding theory .

Arıkan studied electrical engineering at Caltech with a bachelor's degree in 1981 and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a master's degree in 1982 and a doctorate in 1985. He was then an assistant professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign . He is a professor at Bilkent University in Ankara , where he has been since 1987.

He introduced polar codes in 2008. The code solves Claude Shannon's channel capacity problem . In 1948 Shannon stated the maximum information-theoretical capacity for reliable communication via a discrete channel with noise and without memory, after which codes were searched for that came as close as possible to the limit value (provable). In 2013 Arıkan received the IEEE WRG Baker Award, in 2010 the IEEE Information Theory Society Paper Award and in 2018 the Richard W. Hamming Medal . For 2019 he was awarded the Claude E. Shannon Award . He is a Fellow of the IEEE and was its Distinguished Lecturer in 2014/15.
