The earthquake on Afghanistan in 2015 occurred in the border region of Pakistan and Afghanistan with a magnitude of 7.5 M W .

Course of events and numbers of victims

The epicenter was around 80 kilometers south of Faizabad . The hypocenter was at a depth of 213 km. The earthquake was also felt in Pakistan and India and left around 400 dead and several thousand injured. According to the authorities, 280 people died in Pakistan and at least 115 people in Afghanistan. In Taloqan , Afghanistan alone , twelve schoolgirls were killed after a mass panic broke out. 4 dead and 10 injured were reported from India. There were also 21 injured in Tajikistan. First reports spoke of thousands of buildings destroyed in Pakistan and Afghanistan. 40 buildings were also destroyed in India, and eight buildings were also reported from Tajikistan. The US seismological reported seventeen aftershocks from 4.0 to 4.8 M W .

Relief efforts

The Pakistani government sent tents, a mobile hospital and helicopters to the affected regions. The United States and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered their support to Pakistan, which Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif declined: "Our own resources are sufficient to deal with the tragedy." In Afghanistan, many places were initially inaccessible to the aid workers because landslides blocked the roads and the streets were controlled by the Taliban . These in turn announced help with the rescue and care of the dead and injured. The Red Crescent aid organization was active with teams in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
