The earthquake in the Iranian - Turkish border area shook the ground on February 23, 2020. The first quake occurred at 9:23 a.m. Iranian time and 8:53 a.m. Turkish local time and had a magnitude of 5.8 M w . After a few smaller aftershocks, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 M w followed in the evening at 7.30 p.m. Iranian or 7.00 p.m. Turkish local time. The quake killed ten people and injured another 141. Several hundred buildings were destroyed or damaged.

tectonics

In western Iran, tectonic events are dominated by the plate boundary between the Arab and Eurasian plates . The collision of these lithospheric plates formed about 1500 kilometers of folds and thrust belts of the Zāgros Mountains . The area in which the earthquakes occurred is criss-crossed by numerous faults , most of which are oriented northeast-southwest, some run from east to west. There were repeated earthquakes in the region. Reports of 23 earthquakes have survived up to 1900. Since 1900, more than 500 earthquakes with magnitudes of 4 or higher have been seismographically recorded. Three quakes even had magnitudes above 7, the last one being the 2011 earthquake in Van .

First quake

The epicenter of the first quake was in the Iranian province of West Azerbaijan near the border with Turkey and about 30–45 kilometers west of the city of Choy . The focus depth is given by the American earthquake observatory of the USGS and the European seismological research company EMSC as 10 kilometers. The quake lasted about 24 seconds.

According to USGS estimates, the quake was felt by approximately 216,000 people with an intensity of level V or higher on the Modified Mercalli Scale, including 3,000 people who experienced an intensity of level VII.

Second quake

According to USGS, the epicenter of the second earthquake was seven kilometers northwest of that of the first quake and, according to consistent data from the USGS and EMSC, had a focus depth of 10 kilometers. This quake shook the ground for about 31 seconds.

Apart from the two strong quakes, the region was hit by several smaller earthquakes. By March 3, eleven of them had magnitudes of 4 or higher.

Victims and damage

In the Turkish province of Van , the first quake immediately killed nine people, and a youth died a few days later in hospital. Another 66 people were injured. The worst hit district was Baskale . According to Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu , around 250 houses and 300 barns and stables collapsed, and another 700 buildings were badly damaged. Some schools were damaged.

75 people were injured in Iran. Between 10 and 100 percent of the mud houses in 43 villages were destroyed. Cellular and fixed network infrastructure as well as electricity, gas and water lines were damaged.

According to information from the Turkish civil protection agency AFAD , no people were harmed in the stronger quake in Turkey in the evening. There were no reports from Iran of possible victims or damage from the second quake.

The earthquake expert Jeofizik Mühendisi from the Technical University of Istanbul attributes the fact that there were fatalities in Turkey, but not in Iran, to the better socio-economic situation and the associated better quality of buildings in Iran. The victims of earthquakes are primarily the poor who have to live in unsafe houses.

Help

AFAD sent search and rescue teams to the affected region of Turkey. Aid workers have also been sent by the Turkish Red Crescent . The searches were discontinued after a few hours, after no people were considered missing. Camps were set up for the homeless residents. AFAD and the Red Crescent delivered around 3,400 tents and other relief supplies to the affected areas.

In Iran, teams of relief workers have been sent to the affected region. The Iranian Red Crescent set up tent camps for the affected population.
