Eremaeozetes sabinae is a horn mite in the Eremaeozetidae familythat was found on the island of Molokai , Hawaii . It lives on the climatically dry side of the island, in forest litter near sandy beaches. The specific epithet sabinae honors Sabina Fajardo Swift from the Bernice Bishop Museum in Honolulu , Hawaii.

features

The length of the females of Eremaeozetes sabinae is 440 to 455 micrometers, the slightly smaller males reach 405 to 430 micrometers.

Like most other species of the genus Eremaeozetes , Eremaeozetes sabinae is also covered by a thick layer of cerotegument . This is a layer of secretion that is excreted on the shell of many horn mites. This layer is colored light to dark brown. After removing the Cerotegument, the surface appears like a network. The sclerotized dorsal upper part of the opisthosoma , the notogaster , has an oval shape. The front edge of the Notogasters protrudes far forward. The central part is wide and raised with lateral lobular extensions. Longitudinal ribs extend from the central part towards the rear edge of the Noto restaurant. The areas between the raised extensions appear as semicircular depressions.

Eremaeozetes sabinae has immobile pteromorphs . With some other types of horn mites, however, they are mobile, so that they can pull their legs back underneath with their own muscles.

Eremaeozetes sabinae is morphologically similar in many respects to Eremaeozetes machadoi , a related mite that was described from Angola in 1989 . Both types belong to a group with longitudinal ribs and lateral lobes on the Notogaster. Differences between the two species can be found mainly in the shape and structure of these Notogastrallappen, as well as in the surface structure of the ventral plate. In front of the genital plate, Eremaeozetes machadoi has a small, indistinct, triangular and hardened scale, whereas Eremaeozetes sabinae has a well-developed one.

Eremaeozetes sabinae belongs to Eremaeozetes machadoi to a group of probably closely related species within the genus Eremaeozetes , for which the name Eremaeozetes reticulatus group was proposed. In addition to the species mentioned, it also includes Eremaeozetes araucana , E. lineatus , E. louisae , and E. nasutus .

Reproduction

Eremaeozetes sabinae reproduces sexually. Up to now, sexual dimorphism could only be determined in body size and visible sexual characteristics (laying tube of the females, eggs).
