Supplementary route Stuttgart – Ulm – Augsburg – Munich

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The supplementary line Stuttgart – Ulm – Augsburg – Munich was a new line planned in 1970 as part of the expansion program for the Deutsche Bundesbahn network . With a length of 220 km, it should connect Stuttgart to Munich via Ulm and Augsburg . The project was assigned to the second highest priority level of the expansion program, which was to be implemented by 1985. Such a new line was also provided for in the 1973 Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan. The project was no longer included in the 1980 Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan.

Planned course

The line was to run on the existing line to Plochingen and then bypass its unfavorable route to the south. The Geislinger Steige should be bypassed to the north before the existing road should be reached at Beimerstetten . Ulm was to be bypassed to the north and connected in a shunt . Between Neuoffingen and Augsburg, the route was to run north of the existing route ; between Augsburg and Munich, a route was planned largely along the existing route there.

Newer plans

The planning of the continuous new line has undergone a number of modifications over time. For example, the upgraded line / new line Plochingen – Günzburg planned in the 1980s was discarded in the early 1990s in favor of the new Wendlingen – Ulm line under construction today (as of 2019) and the Stuttgart 21 concept . The Augsburg – Ulm railway line was expanded in sections around 1990 for 200 km / h. The Munich – Augsburg railway line, which has been passable at 200 km / h since the mid-1960s, was supplemented by two more tracks by 2011 and has since been passable at up to 230 km / h.
